A live-action/animated 'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie is on the way

Paramount Pictures picked up the project after Sony Entertainment put the project at the backburner, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Now, the duo is racing ever closer to their first proper big screen appearance, as the long-in-development Sonic the Hedgehog movie is making new headway with Deadpool director Tim Miller on board as executive producer.

"Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts", Miller said in a statement upon Fowler's hiring. It continues to stand as one of the bestselling video game franchises of all time. Though he was first introduced in a massively popular video game series, the titular character and his friends have also appeared in multiple television shows too.

SEGA video game hero Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own film, and Paramount Pictures have acquired the rights to the film.

Most of the team from Sony's Sonic plans are still in the mix with Paramount. He has two this year: Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. In its early versions as a 16-bit video game, Sonic ran around to collect rings and evade the villain, Dr. Edman, as with any typical arcade game. Fowler has previously directed the animated short A Gentleman's Duel and the Oscar-nominated reboot of Gopher Broke.

Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled for a 2019 release. Sonic the Hedgehog has sold more than 360 million copies, accounting for both retail and digital games, across various consoles and systems.
