"When Horacio called me and told me Real Madrid were interested, I said I just wanted to play there".

Zinedine Zidane has rejected suggestions Real Madrid are dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo following a stuttering start to its defence of La Liga in the Portuguese star's absence.

"We thought it was odd that Neymar left Barcelona", he said. In the end we couldn't get anybody else in.

'If I would go to PSG? He's young, he's eager and he's hungry.

"We tried to get in another player, a year ago we had Morata and Mariano and now only [Borja] Mayoral is in the squad".

Zidane elected to leave Mayoral out of his squad for the match against but confirmed that he will be on the list for APOEL.

Ronaldo had been handed a domestic five-match ban after pushing a referee during the Spanish Super Cup first leg, reports Efe. We are all happy that he is with us. "He is an important player in the squad, a leader who always wants to win and instills that among his teammates", the former Real Madrid player added.

Zidane was critical of his side after their display at the weekend, but said he and his players were relaxed despite drawing back-to-back league games for the first time in a year.

"And we are happy too, because he is mentally very well, physically very fine".

They showed they are no pushovers last season when they knocked Athletic Club Bilbao out of the last 32 of the Europa League.

The coach said that Ronaldo was focused on the task ahead and was very happy to have the opportunity to play again.
