3 takeaways from win over Iowa State

Against an Iowa State offense that came in averaging 6.5 yards per play and 41 points per game, they allowed four yards per play and a single touchdown. The main takeaway is that the Longhorns' formula going forward is to win with defense. But a win on the road in league play is never something to scoff at - especially when you're just four games into Herman's coaching tenure.

"Obviously, the defensive performance was phenomenal", said Texas coach Tom Herman.

Texas beat Iowa State 17-7.

Texas sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele returned to the starting lineup and he helped the Longhorns build a 14-0 halftime lead. "When you look at big-picture goals. we want to compete for the Big 12 Championship in the month of November", Herman said. Since then, the Horns competed with and almost defeated the No. 5 ranked USC Trojans and had a convincing victory over the Iowa State Cyclones. But, contrary to popular belief, good defensive play alone won't win a Big 12 title with the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and TCU lurking with offenses that operate on jet fuel. Chris Warren III scored the night's opening touchdown but combined with Kyle Porter to gain just 83 yards on 33 carries (2.5 per carry). A big reason for that is senior wide receiver Allen Lazard, a preseason All-American who has 19 receptions for 178 yards and three touchdowns and is the active NCAA career leader in consecutive games with a reception (38). But Iowa State unsuccessfully tried to open things up with its passing game in the first half, which forced them to abandon the running game after it went down by 14 points. "I thought that they had better plans, and their players executed their plans better than we did".

Park finished 24 of 49 for 246 yards but for the game ISU only had 256 yards of total offense. Jack Trice Stadium on a weeknight can be an ambush waiting to happen (see: No. 2 Oklahoma State and its double-overtime loss in 2011).
