Wenger: I'm relieved that Giroud stayed

Arsenal had to come from behind twice to beat Leicester City 4-3 in a thriller as the Premier League season got off to a flying start on Friday with Arsene Wenger's substitutions turning the match around at The Emirates.

The north London side's lead lasted just over two minutes as Shinji Okazaki headed home from close range after some poor defensive errors from the Arsenal goalkeeper and defender.

The Frenchman, who has been at the club since 1996, has been given a chance to turn things around despite calls for his head from disgruntled Arsenal fans waiting for a first league title under his stewardship since he led them to the crown in 2004.

Danny Welbeck then brought Arsenal back level on the brink of half-time.

Wenger shuffled his pack and Aaron Ramsey levelled with eight minutes remaining before fellow substitute Giroud wrapped up the points.

"You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play".

Giroud had been seriously considering his future following the £52 million club record signing of Alexandre Lacazette and Wenger's certainty but has been persuaded to stay in what is now a "super sub" role.

"But I don't want him to go and in the end he chose to stay and it was one of the days of recent weeks for me because I know how important he is".

"It is fantastic", Wenger replied when asked about Giroud's willingness to fight for his place. It was one of the great days of recent weeks for me because I know how important he is.

"With the first corner, we were late".

Cech, who holds the Premier League record for clean sheets, admitted that conceding three goals at home was not "an ideal start".

"So overall I think he adapts slowly to the way we want to play and is a collective player and an intelligent player as well". I thought the ball would go out as it was flying over me and suddenly there was a player.
