The Next Stand-Alone Star Wars Movie Will Be an Obi-Wan Prequel


A standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars film is reportedly in the works, and a possible director is supposedly in talks for the project. Right now, director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Crown) is in negotiations to helm the film.

As such, it's unclear if Ewan McGregor will pick up the lightsaber for this Star Wars offshoot, though given how keen the Scot has been in the past, we're inclined to believe McGregor will sign on without a second's hesitation. No word yet on whether or not Ewan McGregor will reprise his role, but I'd be shocked if he didn't. It's also unknown exactly what the Obi-Wan film would be about, though conventional wisdom suggests it would focus on the character's exile on the planet Tatooine in-between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

That's important: EW's sources say there's still an "if" involved, but yes - we can confirm this is a movie that's being actively explored as a possible stand-alone beyond 2019's Episode IX. It would be fun to film that story now I'm older. Because it's the only significant chunk of Obi-Wan Kenobi's life audiences haven't seen. He appeared in the subsequent films in the original trilogy as a Force ghost after his demise at the hands of Darth Vader.

When it became clear that the Disney-owned Lucasfilm would indeed be venturing into the realm of Star Wars spinoff films, fans began dreaming up a pretty substantial wish list. Yet with Lucasfilm officially coming on board with Obi-Wan, my guess is it will be the 2020 Star Wars entry.
