One jawan martyred, another injured as Pakistan violates ceasefire in Poonch


One woman was killed in Pakistan shelling along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Medhar sector early on Saturday. Tomar who is a native of Madhya Pradesh's Tarsana village is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

"The Pakistani army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatic weapons and mortars from 0515 hours in Poonch sector along the LoC".

Another soldier is reported to have been injured in Pakistan army's indiscriminate firing in the same sector.

Mehta said the Pakistani troops had also breached the border ceasefire in Poonch district in the morning. "Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively", he said, adding that in the exchange of fire, Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries. "They remained confined to their homes and once the firing and shelling subsided, they moved to underground bunkers for safety", he said.

Till August 1 this year, there have been 285 instances of ceasefire violation by the Pakistani troops. "As the security forces approached, the hiding terrorists fired at them triggering a fierce encounter which as per reports last came in is on", said sources.

The death toll of soldiers in July was higher than the casualties suffered by security forces in Pakistani troops firing and shelling along the LoC in the State previous year.
