Major blast kills 15 in capital of Pakistan's Balochistan province


A powerful blast targeting a military truck today killed at least 15 people, including eight soldiers, and injured over two dozen others in Pakistan's southwestern restive province of Balochistan. The high intensity blast occurred in a parking lot near Pishin bus stop which is in a high security area.

The ISPR said the vehicle deployed on security duty was targeted in the attack. Earlier, several television channels had reported that around 17 dead bodies were brought to the hospital and majority were badly charred and burnt.

"An attempt to mar independence day festivity. Our resolve won't succumb to any challenge", DG ISPR Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor posted on Twitter.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that an on-duty security vehicle was targeted in the blast, adding that 10 security officials were also injured in the blast.

Army troops reached incident site and cordoned off the area. Medics say some of the injured have life-threatening wounds, while the bodies of the dead are charred beyond recognition. "15 people including 7 civilians were martyred", the statement said, adding that 25 people including 15 civilians had been injured and taken to a military hospital. "At least 32 others are wounded", Dawn quoted Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti as saying.

Balochistan Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti said it was a huge explosion that targeted a vehicle of security forces.

Casualties were also confirmed by rescue and hospital sources. Reportedly, vehicles in the immediate vicinity caught fire and over ten water tenders are on the site.

Balochistan Assembly and FC Hostel are near the spot of the explosion and the area is categorised as sensitive.
