Laverne Cox To Lil Duval: Trans Murder Isn't A Joke

Share

Transgender women of color make up thehighest statistics of homicide rates in the country and not disclosing our identities and "tricking" straight heterosexual men into sleeping with us is one of the biggest perpetuated stereotypes used as a fear-mongering tactic to promote transphobia.

Mock, whose status as a transgender woman was tastelessly placed at the center of the conversation, was personally impelled to read Duval and "Breakfast Club" male hosts Charlamagne tha God and DJ Envy in an essay for Allure. Chyna was the fifth trans woman killed in 2017. His interlocutors giggled at the remark. "This is only about one situation, and the situation was 'what would I do if I found out somebody was a man that I thought was a woman, and didn't tell me she was a woman'".

In response, Duval said, "This might sound messed up and I don't care".

The hosts pushed back on the comment.

"That ain't a girl, I met a boy", Lil Duval clarified. "My sisters and I are here and we exist, and you will not diminish our light and our brilliance".

"I don't got no problem with transgender, I ain't got no problem with gay people".

"I can't live with that, bro", he continued.

"This would never happen if this never happened. So you don't have to worry about me killing nobody".

"That n**ga doin' his thing", Duval replied. "Until then, I'm going to have my own repercussions".

Lil Duval wasn't alone in feeling the heat.

Sadly, Duval seems to believe he's taking a stance by not accepting that his line of thinking is harmful. "I can say what I want and do what I want and people understand where I'm coming from".

Duval then said he wasn't "coming from a place of malice".

Ciara McElveen, Chyna Doll Dupree, Mesha Caldwell, Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, Jojo Striker and Keke Collier (just to name a few) are transgender women who have actually been killed for being who they are.

Clips from the segment quickly went viral.

Condemnation came nearly immediately, with hashtags #BoycottBreakfastClub, #TransLivesMatter and #TransFolksAreNotJokes all surfacing on Twitter.

"Some folks think it's ok to joke about wanting to kiss us", Cox wrote. It hurts my spirit cause this isn't amusing.

Over the past several days, many online have responded with condemnation towards Charlemagne and Envy, and in defense of Mock and trans people in general; on Twitter, the trans rights activist Raquel Willis began a hashtag, #TransFolksAreNotJokes.

TMZ reports trans activists confronted Charlamagne when he spoke at Politicon convention Sunday. "We are not a joke".

Lil Duval had plenty of defenders on social media, many of them using language not printable here. Lil Duval's statement is extremely harmful and extremely effective in giving people an excuse to continue to harm us. But the comedian is not backing down from his comments, claiming it's his job as a comedian to anger people.

"I'm not gonna kill transgenders", he countered.

One pointed out the major issue of trans women being murdered.

Just last week, the New York Post reported that a former Navy sailor was sentenced to prison for fatally stabbing a woman 19 times after discovering she was transgender. "I lost it", he said.
