Kissimmee Police Department officers shot dead


Two police officers were shot dead in Kissimmee, Florida, on Friday night, officials confirmed.

One suspect was taken into custody, and an active search continued for at least one other suspect.

According to Kissimmee Police, the shooting took place in the area of Cypress and Palmway streets.

"Please join in prayers for families, friends, and law enforcement", said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs tweeted.

"Our law enforcement officers are true heroes and we will miss these courageous Floridians", Scott posted on Twitter.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeffrey O'Dell expected to address the media in the next 15 minutes.

Authorities have not released the names of the officers nor the extent of any injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol said there was "heavy police activity" in the area and told people to avoid the area.

No further information about the incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m., was immediately available.

The Winter Park Police Department tweeted, "We stand with our brothers and sisters at the Kissimmee Police Department". The Orange County sheriff's office also tweeted "solidarity" with the Kissimmee community as they handle the "tragic loss".
