J&K: Security forces and terrorists exchange fire at Shopian's Awneera village


An army man was killed and four others suffered injuries as a gunfight rages in Awneera village of Shopian in southern part of Kashmir on Saturday, police said. "Following which gunfight erupted", a senior police officer said. However, there is no confirmation about the number of militants killed in the operation.

"As the security forces tightened the cordon, hiding terrorists opened fire at the party".

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation following information about presence of terrorists in Avneera village of Zainapora area of the district, a police official said.

Separately, in north Kashmir's Bandipora, two policemen were wounded when they were shot by suspected militants, and a civilian succumbed to his injuries from a petrol bomb attack in Srinagar.

Among those trapped, the reports said include some top commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen and Laskar-e-Toiba. Meanwhile, clashes between security forces and locals have also errupted near the encounter site.

SSP Shopian told news agency GNS that the firing has stopped and searches have been launched to trace the bodies of militants.
