Flood situation improves, total death toll 123

East-Central Railway (ECR) chief public relations officer Rajesh Kumar said no train was travelling beyond Katihar towards the north east as flood waters have inundated the railway tracks.

"Special trains between Guwahati and Dalkhola (in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal) were arranged on Wednesday for stranded passengers".

The Northeast Frontier Railway has cancelled at least 11 trains and terminated four others on Monday due to heavy rainfall.

Since train services have been severely affected, airlines are taking advantage of the situation by hiking ticket prices by nearly 50 per cent. With the deaths reported today, the toll in the third wave of floods has gone up to 39 in the north-eastern state. As many as 84 people died in the first wave of floods last month.

As flood waters were flowing over National Highway 37, communication between upper and lower Assam have snapped.

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that Prime Minister Modi was himself keeping a close watch on the flood situation in Bihar and he also apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of the situation during the day.

The district administrations have set up 315 relief camps where 1.68 lakh people are taking shelter. Over 4,600 people have been evacuated to safer places by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel in many districts. The recent floods in south Bengal had claimed about 50 lives. Almost 70 lakh people have been hit by inundation in 13 districts. He also called Chief Minister Sonowal on August 13 and 14 and took a detailed account of the flood induced damages in the State and assured all help to the state to tide over the problem.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger mark at Neematighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.
