England scores an impressive 348/3 on Day 1

Earlier, England had piled up 514 for eight declared behind an excellent 243 from veteran left-hander Cook.

"They weren't mine. the guy who I borrowed them off, because I didn't have my own, was under-12s".

"I was actually pointing to Ottis Gibson there", Broad said.

"Not as much as you might think - he's a modest guy, and Jimmy and (Alastair) the same", Root said. But Roach sent the second ball of the test so wide of the stumps that it went to second slip, and that set the tone for the West Indian bowling performance rather than his delivery to beat Stoneman.

With the Ashes just three months away, there remains considerable uncertainty over the make-up of England's top five, but Root and his predecessor as captain were able to provide reassuring stability in a stand of 248 that helped the host reach 348-3.

Cook, who now had Toby Roland-Jones for company, fell to Chase, who took 4 for 113, when he missed an attempted leg-side flick.

Broad is now second in England's list of all-time leading Test wicket-takers, with only new-ball colleague James Anderson ahead of him.

Broad passed Botham's mark by bowling Shane Dowrich as the former all-rounder looked on from a television commentary box.

Cook was 153 not out - his tenth score of 150 or more in Tests equalling the England record shared by Leonard Hutton, Walter Hammond and Kevin Pietersen. You don't really remember the wickets you take, you remember the matches you win and those special moments.

The first of a three-match campaign starts at Edgbaston on Thursday with the inaugural day/night Test in England.

"It's a very hard period to come out in bat in - it would be even on a normal Test match day, with 15 overs left in the day - so for Dawid to make sure he was still there at the end, 28 not out, was a fantastic effort". The bowlers has been sprayed all over the place and I'm not sure we can call the spinners that.

"We were relentless with the areas we bowled (as well), got the ball to move sideways. We got the ball to move sideways and the lads we have with the new ball, you always know they will create opportunities".

"It is important we regroup and get ready for the second Test match, we have nothing to lose".

His opposite number Jason Holder had precious little to cheer him.

Barely had a Windies first innings where Jermaine Blackwood's 79 not out accounted for almost half the total finished, then Anderson struck again when Kieran Powell edged to former captain Cook at first slip.

"We've got to just believe, we have a few days off now, we have to use them wisely".

Malan, who made just 35 runs in two matches in the recent South Africa series, was delighted to make a contribution and learn from one of the best in game.

"The series is not lost... But each player has to look himself in the mirror and see where they can improve".

England have announced they will take an unchanged 13-man squad to Headingley for the second Test, which begins on Friday.
