Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Nascar Cup Car unleashed

Since 2013 the Camaro SS has run in the Xfinity Series.

When speaking to Automotive News, General Motors vice president of global product development, Mark Reuss, acknowledged that comparable Mustangs and Challengers generally carry a lower base price than the Chevy, and the Camaro's large price jump to upgrade to the V8 engine.

The Camaro ZL1 will make its competitive debut next February during Daytona Speedweeks, which annually kicks off the 2018 NASCAR season.

Moreover, Chevy claimed that their engineers used an array of tools and calculations like computational fluid dynamics and reduced scale and full-scale wind tunnel testing to optimize the car's aerodynamic performance.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was on hand for the announcement, a driver that has raced for the bow tie since his Cup debut in 2001. "We looked at NASCAR, for example-took a very hard look at running the Camaro in the Nationwide series".

Specifically, the Cup Series auto is a Camaro ZL1, its name and style taken from the top of the line model, which is powered by a supercharged 650 hp V8.

While the street version of the Camaro ZL1 uses a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, the race vehicle will be subject to NASCAR rules, which stipulate a naturally aspirated engine and no more than 358 cubic inches. Those COPO F-body Camaros became legends on the street and drag strip and today are sought-after by collectors. Over 40 years after the ZL1 returns to the sales floor with track ready performance.

Chevrolet officials confirmed in early January the automaker would cease production of the Chevy SS at the end of the 2017 model run. The 2018 Camaro ZL1 is powered by a 650-horsepower supercharged engine featuring a similar 90-degree V-8 configuration as the Cup racing engines. Hendrick purchased VIN 001 at a Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $250,000, with all proceeds benefiting the United Way.
