Canadian teenager Shapovalov shocks Nadal in Montreal

Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who was born in Israel, followed his upset of Rafael Nadal with another three-set victory to put him in the the semifinals of the Rogers Cup, where he will be joined by Roger Federer. After he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round, he pulled off the upset of the tournament by defeating Rafael Nadal in the third round to reach his first masters quarter-final.

Either Nadal or the third-ranked Federer will take over the top spot in the rankings from Scotland's Andy Murray on August 21, following the conclusion of next week's hard-court event in Cincinnati. "I believe it's because I was more aggressive coming to the net". Neither Shapovalov or Nadal could create separation during the third set that went into a tiebreak.

As a reward for his unlikely victory, the 2016 Wimbledon junior champion will next face 29-year-old Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Federer was sloppy from the outset on centre court, sending routine forehands wide and providing the underdog Ferrer with early break opportunities in the Montreal encounter.

18-year old Canadian Denis Shapovalov has become the giant killer of the Rogers Cup.

Ferrer capitalised by winning the opener to end Federer's streak of 32 consecutive sets won, a record that dates back to his defeat to Tommy Haas at the Stuttgart Open on June 14.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially against Dimitrov", said Haase.

The outburst appeared to steady the Swiss, whose serve and overall accuracy improved as the two-hour match progressed. He quickly got on a roll in Montreal beating Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva in the opening round 4-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4.

Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman posted a odd win over American Jared Donaldson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to a quarter-final meeting with Robin Haase, the 52nd-ranked Dutchman who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1.

After facing a run of veterans, he will be up against the 20-year-old Zverev, who beat Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-5, 6-4.
