Buffalo Bills reshape team in two surprising trades with Rams and Eagles

That's why the Rams have made an effort to provide him with as many tools as possible. That future comes at a certain cost and in the Bills' case that included wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who the Bills once considered their franchise superstar.

Buffalo also continued stockpiling 2018 draft picks by acquiring a second-round selection from Los Angeles and a third-rounder from the Eagles. But after the bombshell he dropped at One Bills Drive, one would have to believe that no one on the Buffalo roster is untouchable.

There are premium draft picks coming Buffalo's way next year as a result of the deals-the Rams second rounder and the Eagles third rounder. Goff was taken first overall in the 2016 draft for a reason and is still only 22 years old.

There are still some unknown variables that prevent Matthews' stock from taking off.

His transition from an Air Raid offense in college meant that the Rams hoped Goff would be able to sit his entire rookie season behind Case Keenum. "We just have to build from that".

He showed some of his potential at times, but those highlights were few and far between. He neglected to surround Goff with the necessary infrastructure to help nurture him in the transition from college to the NFL. In just seven games he was sacked 26 times and had to rely on Kenny Britt, Brian Quick and Tavon Austin to throw to. It was the most that a cornerback has allowed all season. As a result of the trade, Buffalo avoids Watkins' huge payday. Will he remain in the slot, or will he have to play a bunch on the outside, where he has struggled?

But all three are big question marks.

Other than a minor ankle injury that slowed him for one practice, Watkins has taken what looks to be a full workload during training camp. Watkins was limited to only eight games, catching 28 passes for 430 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Watkins can play a role similar to the one DeSean Jackson played in Washington the past four years for McVay, who was the Redskins' offensive coordinator. He's a deep threat with crisp route running and is capable of absurd one-handed receptions.

What both Matthews and Gaines have in common is that both are set to be unrestricted free agents after this season.

The Rams drafted Gaines in the sixth round in 2014 and he immediately made an impact.

"That's when I really seen him at his best", said Robey-Coleman, Watkins" teammate on the Bills these past three years before he signed with Los Angeles in April. Jordan Matthews is a starting receiver. Because the quarterback position is still a mess, Gurley will still need to be the heartbeat of the offense but now there are more options for the ball to get spread out. The Rams don't have much cap space to work with, but have numerous pieces to be a strong team if Goff comes around.
