2 dead after police helicopter crashes near Charlottesville


The incident happened just after 5 p.m. EST near a golf course just east of town.

Witnesses are reporting seeing a Virginia State Police helicopter crash near Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville.

Initial reports suggested that the aircraft was in fact a State Police helicopter and local news stated that police had confirmed that the vehicle was one of their own. In a video by The Daily Caller, it was first stated that a helicopter had gone down in Charlottesville.

State Police have not said if the helicopter was involved in Saturday's rally in Charlottesville.

"There are two confirmed fatalities", the statement read. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a helicopter crash in Albemarle County. At least one person was killed and 19 injured when a auto plowed into a group of counter-protesters.
