Woman Arrested After 3-Year-Old Shoots 2-Year-Old

Authorities say a 2-year-old Colorado Springs boy has been critically injured in an apparently accidental shooting and a 30-year-old woman has been arrested.

Police say the boy is in serious but stable condition as of Sunday afternoon.

Abeyta was hysterical when police arrived, and the 3-year-old said "something to the effect of shooting the baby and that the baby was dead", court documents say.

"They said that it was in her purse and that he got it out of there", she said.

The sister recalled what police told her about the incident. Saturday morning, she placed the gun into a backpack.

During a search of the home the next day, detectives said they found a glass pipe and a bag of what they suspect is meth and a bag of suspected marijuana.

Investigators did not explain Abeyta's relationship to the children involved. He also emphasized the importance of securing live firearms.

The mother of the two boys, 30-year-old Monica Abeyta, has been arrested for felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. She left jail Sunday on a $10,000 bond.
