The US withdrawal from the Paris climate pact could "in a worst case scenario" add a 0.3 degree Celsius rise in global temperatures over the 21st century, the United Nations said on Friday.

"A year and a half ago, the world came together in Paris around the first-ever global agreement to set the world on a low-carbon course and protect the world we leave to our children", said the former USA president.

World leaders have clamoured to condemn Donald Trump for pulling the United States out of the Paris Agreement.

"I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris", he commented.

And with the Paris decision, China will assume global leadership in renewable energy - the principal growth industry of the future, as Trump embraces the fantasy that America's energy future lies with coal, the technology driver of the 19th century.

"This is an insane move by this president; the world depends on a sustainable future", said Governor Jerry Brown of California.
