Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

Obama announced in December 2014 that he and Cuban leader Raul Castro were restoring diplomatic ties between their countries, arguing that a new approach was needed because the policy the US had pursued for decades had failed to democratize the island.

A shooting on Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, has brought a flood of prayers from politicians and communities who are united in faith following the attack.

In the course of Thursday night's charity game, which drew a record attendance to Nationals Park, MedStar hospital issued a new update on Scalise's condition, saying that the lawmaker "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours". The annual GOP-Democrats baseball game raises money for charity.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans put aside their political differences Thursday to play in the traditional Congressional Baseball Game a day after a horrific shooting left Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and others wounded. "All you're doing is stirring up more trouble" by making another incision larger than the fragment to try to get it out, explained Dr. Deborah Stein, trauma chief at the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center.

The House of Representatives majority whip underwent another operation on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with his family. He has required surgery several times since the shooting.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

Sava said he was optimistic about the progress made by Scalise over the past 48 hours.

A rifle bullet hit his left hip, shattering bones, tearing organs, and leaving him in a critical condition.

Pushing that message of unity were the House leaders Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who told CNN's Jake Tapper on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront" that despite party affiliation they were both on "Team Scalise".

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged. "He said, 'I'm thirsty.' Obviously, you don't know how much fluid he may be losing internally". The congressman's risk of death was now substantially lower because doctors have controlled the bleeding and his vital signs have stabilised. He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital. "Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of [Capitol police agents] Crystal Griner and David Bailey who saved everyone's lives at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's".
