Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against USA president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers. Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson was later shot by police and died thereafter. "He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement".

Scalise's trauma surgeon said Friday he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death. Although infection remains a risk, Scalise's vitals had stabilized Friday afternoon.
The hospital said Scalise underwent another surgery Saturday to treat the gunshot wound. The bullet caused massive bleeding, and damaged bones and internal organs. The congressman is still in critical condition in the ICU, but his doctors are staying optimistic.

In a final flourish of bipartisan camaraderie, Democrat Mike Doyle, his team's manager, accepted the trophy, then gave it to his Republican counterpart Joe Barton to put in Mr Scalise's office on behalf of the Democrats.
