Star Trek: Discovery Actor Explains Her Character's Vulcan Connection

Star Trek: Discovery is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout, Living Dead Guy Productions, and Roddenberry Entertainment with Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serving as exec producers. She is also close with Spock's father Sarek (James Frain). There has been much speculation that Burnham might even be half Vulcan, like Spock himself.

Every starship needs a captain, and we now have our first look at the captain of the USS Discovery. She's fully human, but is the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center in her youth, then graduate to the Vulcan Science Academy. The ship's bridge seen in the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was actually that of the Shenzhou, the ship of Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) on which Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Gree) has served for seven years. "I have an inner war", Martin-Green says, "and it's a journey of self discovery and finding out what it means to be alive, to be human, to be a Starfleet officer, what it means to be a hero". For some reason, seeing Isaacs in a uniform that is clearly from some unholy midpoint between Enterprise's blue coveralls and Star Trek: The Original Series, with TNG's bunching issues on full just hits me, right in the heart. Producers have indicated Discovery will be a different kind of Star Trek show. Whether Discovery will prove to be worth all the extra effort poured into it remains an open question, but the cast is unquestionably strong, and it's encouraging to hear there's a clear vision of where the show's characters are headed.
