Sean Spicer says Trump has confidence in Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein

It bears repeating that there are multiple, ongoing investigations, in Congress, in the media, in law enforcement, and in intelligence circles, related to Russian interference in the 2016 election, and President Trump has taken no official action to impede any of them.

Our suggestion would be that Mueller decide first whether there is even a shred of evidence to back up the Trump-colluding-with-Russia claim - something that looks increasingly unlikely. Jay Sekulow, a member of the president's legal team, on Sunday still had to repeat he was not literally confirming the investigation.

Last week, President Donald Trump tweeted that he's being investigated over the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

THE FACTS: The president once again shows a lack of understanding of how law-enforcement investigations work, or a willingness to misrepresent the process.

Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Donald Trump, on Sunday said the president is not being investigated for obstruction of justice.

"In that letter, there's recommendation for the removal of James Comey".

Last Wednesday, the Washington Post ran a story alleging that Mueller had broadened his Russian Federation probe to also consider whether the president had attempted to influence that investigation.

The president wrote on Twitter Friday: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!" Neither his (alleged) statements to Comey nor his dismissal of Comey had the slightest effect on any of these inquiries, except perhaps to add fuel to the fire of the left's Trump-Russia witch hunt. The message apparently referred to Rosenstein, whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated.

But so far, Sekulow's short tenure as Trump's personal defender on TV hasn't been so smooth. Kushner is now represented by Jamie Gorelick, who is a partner at the firm WilmerHale. In the subsequent furor over Comey's dismissal - largely stoked by Trump's conflicting reasons for firing the director, which first adopted but then parted company with Rosenstein's memo - Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel.

For purposes of clarification, this memorandum was reportedly written on or about February 13, 2017 and is the subject of a New York Times article ... dated May 16, 2017.

The two were formerly law partners at Washington firm WilmerHale.

Reynolds notes that all that's required to disqualify Justice Department conflict of interest rules is just the appearance of a conflict.

"The President is attacking Bob Mueller, and therefore Newt Gingrich is attacking Bob Mueller", Schiff said.

A few minutes before that tweet, Trump spoke about the witch hunt, saying "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great".

The president has directed some of his frustration at Rosenstein and Mueller. Sen.

Kushner's current attorney said that discussions he had with other lawyers were to seek advice, not to replace his team.

So the president is not under investigation.

Coats and Rogers both declined to discuss private conversations with Trump during congressional testimony earlier this month. Mueller also was expected to meet sometime during the week with top members of the House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee for a similar discussion.

The lawyer also suggested Twitter's character limit may be partly to blame. Mr Schiff said he wants the White House to acknowledge the tapes or make clear there are no tapes and "it was an idle threat".
