The U.S. Navy shot down a Syrian government fighter jet in retaliation for dropping bombs on U.S. -backed rebels.
A USA fighter jet shot down a Syrian government warplane on Sunday after the aircraft had dropped bombs on US-backed forces fighting so-called "Islamic State" (IS) fighters, the Pentagon confirmed.
The Assad regime disputed the Pentagon's version of Sunday's events, claiming that the aircraft which was shot down had been engaged in actions against ISIS, not against USA -backed rebel forces.
Moscow has condemned the USA downing of the Syrian government fighter jet after it dropped bombs nears US partner forces.
"The coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria", the official statement said.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Russian news agencies on Monday that the downing was akin to "helping the terrorists that the U.S.is fighting against".
SDF came under attack from regime forces in favor of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad around 4:30 p.m. Syria time. This month Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters, supported by US advisers and air power, began the battle for Raqqa, the militants' self-declared capital.Читайте также: Irish, British PMs to meet to talk Brexit, N.Ireland crisis
Now Washington is extending this protection to forces that it backs who are engaged in the offensive against Raqqa.
In response to the attack on the SDF group, which is supported by the USA, coalition aircraft worked to stop the initial advance into the town, according to a statement from Operation Inherent Resolve.
Iran's focus is increasingly on the border region between Syria and Iraq.
The US Central Command said the plane was downed "in collective self-defence of Coalition-partnered forces", identified as fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces near Tabqah.
US-backed forces has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province. Attempts to warn the Syrian plane away from the area using an emergency radio frequency failed, said Col.
It said it had "contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established "de-confliction line" to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing".
According to the Syrian statement, the plane was carrying out operations against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the countryside around Raqqa when it was targeted, leading to a crash and the loss of the pilot, who is now missing.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
