Rep. Scalise's Condition Upgraded to 'Serious'

In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that Scalise will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

A motive for the attack is still under investigation, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies said in a statement Friday.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Murphysboro Republican whose 12th Congressional District covers the Belleville area, has said Hodgkinson contacted his offices a number of times, but none of the communication seemed threatening, according to Bost spokesman George O'Connor.

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican Party lawmaker baseball practice on Wednesday.

Doctors treating wounded House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise have upgraded his condition from "critical" to "serious".

But this year after the Alexandria shooting, which left House Majority Whip Congressman Steve Scalise in critical condition and three others hurt, playing meant more than charity.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

He also said that Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, is in "good condition".

Sava said Scalise would need to undergo an additional operation within the next 48 hours and more beyond that.

Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg.

Still, finger-pointing lingered as some on each side suggested the other had contributed more to the disparaging broadsides they've increasingly aimed at each other. Doyle gave the winning trophy back to the Republicans to put in Scalise's hospital room. Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip.

Officer David Bailey recovered enough to throw the first pitch at Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Mr Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Dr Sava said. The two have enjoyed a long-running ribbing over the game, which Republicans won last year to break a seven-year Democratic win streak.

Underscoring the day's mood, the Rev. Patrick Conroy, the House chaplain, opened the day by seeking divine forgiveness "when we seem to forget that words matter and can become seeds that will bring bitter harvest".

The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.
