Brooks was still present on the field when Hodgkinson began shooting with a rifle, wounding four people including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.
Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don't plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said.
The man who shot Scalise and others at the baseball practice had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case. Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's professional baseball team, and the Democrats won, 11 to 2.
Scalise was shot while practicing at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.
Sue Hodgkinson told reporters outside her IL home Thursday that she was busy with her job and didn't know a lot about what her husband, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, did between January and March.More news: Hideki Matsuyama closes with 6-under 66 in US Open

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.
"He's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought", he said, adding that he hoped the country could become more unified in the aftermath of the shooting.
As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future.
One of the Capitol Police officers injured in Wednesday's shooting has thrown out the first pitch at the congressional baseball game - to thunderous applause.
"[Scalise] will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones". Six people were injured during the attack, including two congressmen, a congressional aide, a lobbyist and two police officers.
