Mourinho restores Man United's winning feeling after Europa victory

Jose Mourinho has described his debut season with Manchester United as the "most difficult" in his 20 years of football management, despite winning three trophies in his first campaign with the club.

Their 29 goals conceded was second-best in the Premier League and only once allowing more than a goal in 15 Europa League contests, astonishing figures considering the way those same defenders played in recent seasons and the injuries to the Red Devils defense.

While Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City will be a part of the group stages of the elite European competition next season, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will have to battle it out in the play-off rounds to make it to the group stages.

On a poignant night in Stockholm, coloured by vivid thoughts of Monday's fatal terror attack in Manchester, United's supporters sang tributes to their grieving city, but also to their manager. We come without the happiness that we should bring with us because when you come for these big matches, you go happy, you go proud and we didn't.

"We have won a trophy the club has never won so we are really happy", said Mata.

Following the match, Mourinho told Sky Italia: 'I joked with Sir Alex telling him I did some work for him.

"If we could, we would change obviously the people's lives for this cup - immediately, we wouldn't think twice".

While most English football fans will be celebrating or commiserating their final weekend successes and losses, for three English clubs, the end is not yet here.

"Now it's up to him and the owners", Mourinho said. We fought hard for this since the beginning. "We prefer it this way than finish fourth, than finish third, than finish second". Since the beginning we had this in our minds. "We were much stronger than them". If you are dominant in the area, you build long. And Mourinho was delighted with his side's pragmatic display, claiming that "poets do not win titles". We knew where they were better than us, we knew where we were better than them.

"We did this very, very well since the first minute and we totally deserved the trophy".
