Mexico fully deserved Portugal point, says Osorio

Portugal opened their Confederations Cup campaign against Mexico today (Sunday). The team qualified for the World Cup in a 2-1 victory against the United States last November, and will make its Confederations Cup debut on Sunday.

In the second half, Cedric Soares scored the second goal for Portugal just four minutes before the end of the game.

The two teams ended up drawing the game 2-2, with Hector Moreno nodding a late equaliser, and there was controversy when Nani's 21st-minute effort was disallowed for offside - with the use of VAR - before Ricardo Quaresma's opener.

'We still believe in qualification, we have great possibilities, because there are still two games left. "But we are not anxious, there are two games left, we still have chances".

Portugal, Chile and hosts Russian Federation are the three contenders who will be appearing for the first time at the FIFA Confederations Cup.

A frantic end to the first half gave way to a tiresome second as both sides were found wanting with their final ball, with Ronaldo - isolated after Nani's withdrawal - unable to influence the game.

'It was not the result we wanted, the team had nearly won and we suffered in the last minute, but this is football, ' he said. We were at least as good as they were. "The Portuguese people love football and, after seeing the team prevail in Europe previous year, they are waiting for the next great achievement".

Head coach Fernando Santos insisted he has total faith in his captain to deliver but Osorio feels it would be risky to ignore the other attacking talent at Portugal's disposal. "We are all with Portugal", Infantino said.

The video assistant referee system also played a role in Portugal's 2-2 draw with Mexico earlier in the day. "We also set up [the Federation Internationale de Football Association video game] on another TV to play during halftime". He also scored important goals in the decisive stages of the Spanish league, a competition Madrid won this season for the first time in five years.

The Portuguese sports daily A Bola published a front-page story Friday saying that Ronaldo was upset with the accusations made against him and that his decision was "irreversible". The team said that he couldn't go because he was receiving post-game treatment, although it said it wasn't anything serious.

"We wanted to win, of course, but we have to be satisfied with this result against the European champions", Chicharito said.

Nani was already celebrating with his team-mates when Argentine referee Nestor Pitana indicated the goal was being reviewed.
