Mattel unveils diverse line of Ken dolls

The company unveiled seven of the 15 new dolls on "Good Morning America" Tuesday. "Climbing back into bed", actor Zach Braff wisecracked of the new variety of doll. If Barbie was a real-life human, she would only have room in her teeny tiny torso for half a stomach and just one of her kidneys! "You go with your bad self, Kenny".

One of the new dolls features Ken in a man bun straight out of the Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto playbook.

Ken, the Barbie-adjacent man doll with no reproductive parts, is no longer just a vapid white surfer dude. Last year Mattel introduced three new body types for Barbie: tall, curvy and petite in addition to new skin tones and hairstyles. People reports that these clones "have three body types-slim, broad and original".

"We are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation", Lisa McKnight, senior VP and general manager for Barbie, said in a statement. "Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie's world".

Mattel is also introducing 25 additional diverse Barbie dolls.

Mattel in April reported that Barbie sales declined 13 percent in the first quarter of 2017 when it also reported a much bigger than expected quarterly loss and cut its full-year sales growth forecast. The dolls cost $9.99 online, and most can be pre-ordered.
