This week let's show unity, celebrate our freedom and our great country by flying our American flags. That same year, the American Flag Day Association was formed, with Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn leading the organization.

Bennie Williams, commander of American Legion Post 9 in Brunswick, said the birthday of the U.S. Army on June 14, 1775, will also be commemorated during the Flag Day ceremony. During the next three decades, state and local celebrations inspired the official Flag Day Proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916.

On Independence Day, we will celebrate the birth of the nation symbolized by this flag. The Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held their first Flag Day celebration on June 14, 1891; the Society of the Sons of the Revolution started Flag Day celebrations a year later.

National Flag Day is an important time in our country's history that is not observed as closely as other holidays, but it's just as important.

The colors of the flag are specifically white, Old Glory Red and Old Glory Blue. It was the same 15-star, 15-stripe flag that was immortalized by Francis Scott Key when he wrote "Star Spangled Banner" during the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814.

In 1795, two stars and two stripes were added after Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union.

However, there was no standardization for the arrangement of the stars or the number of points on each star until President William Howard Taft signed an executive order in 1912 clarifying the patterns.

A sketch of Hopkinson's flag design does not exist today, so controversy continues around the exact origins of the modern American flag. In light of that holiday, Memorial Day, and the quickly-approaching Fourth of July, I thought it relevant to share some of the United States' tradition, regulations, and laws pertaining to the American flag, all of which can be found in various government publications.
