Kentuckian Justin Thomas uses record round to grab US Open lead

"All Jimmy (caddie Jimmy Johnson) and I were trying to do is give ourselves a best chance to make a four".

He hit it good.

Zach Johnson holed an 8-foot putt on the par-3 ninth for his third birdie of the front nine. His game showed some rust at Erin Hills, especially off the tee on Thursday, when the last time he hit a fairway was on the 10th hole.

Now comes the really hard part: winning the tournament. "I'm looking forward to my shot at it". They are one and two shots respectively, behind leader Brian Harman.

Of the five other players who shot a 63 in the third round at a major, none went on to win. Facing mounting financial issues, Lang in 2009 was forced to sell the course to Andy Ziegler, and that's a story that could be its own movie script, Kubly said. I got off to a pretty good start, which I really haven't done yet, so that was nice. So I was very familiar with the Kettle Moraine land, what I'd call sinkhole kinda land, that didn't always drain - just a real unique, nearly Irish, Scottish look to it, gently rolling but it's like the glacier did some unique things to this land when it went through.

Harman is in the throes of his best season on Tour.

Harman, 30, joined the PGA Tour in 2012 and has won two tournaments, including the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year. Then I 3-putted the 7th because of a spike mark in my line on a 1.5 foot second putt. I want a U.S. Open where some poor person in the production truck is forced to hover his finger over the mute button all day, because players can't stop cussing about their misfortunes.

On-site forecaster Jake Swick says we face a 40 percent chance of showers and storms most, if not all, of Saturday. But he exudes confidence, and he'll need every ounce of that self-belief Sunday afternoon.

Harman and Thomas will tee off in the final pairing at 2:54 p.m.

Thomas turned in a highlight reel-round. He drove the green on the 288-yard, par-4 15th and got down in two.

Justin Thomas made history on Saturday when he shot a 63.

"I'm going to enjoy my time tonight with my little girl and my wife". "I don't know what I'm going to feel tonight or if I'm going to sleep well". It would have been the round of the day had Thomas not shot 63. It was dizzying, disorienting, electrifying. Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood are at 8 under.

Brendan Steele and Marc Leishman charged. "Yeah, it's a tremendous honor to tie him".

36-hole logjam in 43 years at the U.S. Open. Is he fired up to win his national championship?

"I didn't think it was the putter, it was the guy on the end of it", said McIlroy, who had 62 putts over two rounds. "It's home", he said.

With the leading 13 players separated by only five shots, however, it means the final round showdown is likely to throw up any number of curve balls. "My grandmother had lived in the same area - she lived in Delafield, Wisconsin, which is just south of the area where Erin Hills is". He only shot 75, with just one birdie. Jamie Lovemark put up a 74.

Jordan Spieth is not among them.

Those are just a few of the possible winners.

The youngster was 14-year-old Charlie Haggerty of Chicago.

One of the favorites on Sunday will be Fowler.

And he's still in the thick of things, just two back.

Rickie Fowler putts on the 12th hole on Saturday.

Fowler, sharing a house with Thomas this week, was being left behind until he ran off three straight birdies and shot 68. On 18 he drove into a bunker but saved par and signed for 68.

Yesterday, Fowler exploited the benign conditions at Erin Hills to haul himself back into the frame. It would do the same for Thomas and Reed, not to mention Harman, Koepka and Fleetwood. With not a single major champion inside the top 16 through three laps, the biggest question going into Sunday Funday is how far back is too far back? "I'd love to have another one of those".

The day indeed belonged to J.T., but will the title?
