Backed by advisers like EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, Trump confirmed in an announcement on Thursday that he intends to pull the US out of the agreement's coordinated effort to set limits on carbon emissions and thus mitigate the effects of.

Trump's move was "a big mistake", Donald Tusk, one of the European Union's top officials, said.

Tapping into the "America First" message he used on the election trail, Trump announced the withdrawal on Thursday, saying that participating in the pact would undermine the US economy, wipe out U.S.jobs, weaken national sovereignty and put his country at a permanent disadvantage to others.

More than 80 city mayors, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin and New Orleans, announced plans for their individual cities to adopt the Paris Climate Agreement.

"It was a transfer of wealth from the most powerful economy in the world to other countries around the planet", he said.

There was a mix of dismay and anger across the world. Here's why US withdrawal from the Paris Accord isn't as big a change as you might be thinking. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement Thursday that Trump's decision creates a "false choice" between economic growth and preserving the environment.

The World Meteorological Organization estimated that US withdrawal from the emissions-cutting accord could add 0.3 degrees Celsius to global temperatures by the end of the century in a worst-case scenario.

General Motors Co said Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra also would remain on the presidential advisory panel, while it remained unclear whether Ford Motor Co's new chief executive, James Hackett, would join the group.

Only two other countries had previously rejected the accord: Nicaragua - which felt the deal did not go far enough in cutting emissions - and Syria.

United States allies have publicly criticized the Trump administration's decision to leave the deal, which was signed by the Obama administration and took effect in November.

At one point, a reporter asked Pruitt if he had his "head in the sand" on climate change science, and he replied, "Well, there's no evidence of that".

"Today we are stepping up our cooperation on climate change with China".

Since taking office, Trump has begun the process of rolling back several environmental regulations aimed at protecting air and water, from the Clean Water Rule - meant to clarify parts of the Clean Water Act - to limits on the amount of allowable ozone pollution.

Experts said that India and Russian Federation need to cooperate multilaterally, and, in fact, are doing so on issues of common interests such as terrorism, climate change, rules-based worldwide order, the World Trade Organization and in other areas. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

A number of figures from US industry expressed their dismay at Trump's move. That's upsetting to climate scientists, but it's happening whether or not the US stays in the accord. "Industry must now lead and not depend on government". Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, made good on his threat to leave several of the president's advisory councils if the president pulled the USA out of the climate deal.

Trump's announcement comes less than 18 months after the climate pact was adopted, the fruit of a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington under Obama's leadership.

Trump tweeted in 2012: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make USA manufacturing non-competitive".
