Florida Gators hoping for more pitching excellence in College World Series finals

LSU's Michael Papierski (2) follows through on his three-run home run against Oregon State in the third inning of an NCAA College World Series baseball elimination game in Omaha, Neb., Saturday, June 24, 2017.

The Tigers are 6-0 in championship situations in the College World Series. Oregon State's Max Engelbrekt entered with two outs in the inning and allowed a single by Jake Slaughter before getting Kramer Robertson to ground out and end the inning.

"And if you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best". Though they both participated in the 1998 and 2015 College World Series, they didn't go head-to-head. To get there, it had to knock off an Oregon State team that came to Omaha having lost just four times all season and will go down as one of the best teams in college baseball's modern era. Now the Tigers are settled in and performing the way they were when they lengthened a winning streak to 17 coming into Omaha.

This year's team lacks depth and dynamic offense, but has been able to count on dominant pitching and defense. Jordan also had a two-out double in the second that set the stage for Papierski's game-changer. "When the ball's hit down the line, I didn't think he hit it as good as he did, but he got the barrel there", Lange said. Florida has the opposite of LSU's luck, completing their most recent tournament run in 2015 as the third-best team in Division I baseball.

A season for the ages came to an unceremonious end amid the thunderous chants of "L-S-U". Alex Faedo was once again on top of his game as the Gators eliminated TCU with a 3-0 victory Saturday night.

The switch-hitting catcher hammered a pitch from Oregon State starter Bryce Fehmel over the right-field field fence to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. So, you know what, I should have asked for a review.

If there was another factor that caused OSU to be on edge Saturday, it was definitely the home plate umpire.

This will be the third all-SEC final.

Florida (50-19) will face rival LSU for the title after the two schools shared the Southeastern Conference regular-season title this season.

In his first two at-bats of the game against Oregon State, Papierski hit home runs.

LSU kept their hopes for a 7th national championship alive, after defeating the top-seeded Oregon St. Beavers, 6-1, at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.

LSU pitcher Alex Lange delivers a pitch during the third inning of an NCAA College World Series baseball game against OR in Omaha, Neb., Friday, June 23, 2017. Designated hitter Christian Hicks had two hits and an RBI. "We need to put that behind us and get ready to play tomorrow". It was his third homer of the CWS as he hit one in LSU's CWS opener against Florida State. The Houston Astros' ninth-round draft pick has hit three of the Tigers' CWS-leading seven homers. LSU won five winner-take-all championship games in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 2000 and beat Texas 2-1 in the 2009 championship series. He said he doesn't like it - and neither does his mom, Baylor women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey - but he's not changing it now that the Tigers are playing for the title. While certainly no one could predict the day he had, his coach said Saturday's performance was a culmination of the work and mindset that the junior has taken on in order to keep improving. "Looks like somebody dumped a plate of noodles on my head".
