Washington unemployment rate drops to 4.6 percent

A separate survey of state residents suggested employment increased by 17,100 in April to nearly 3.05 million.

The preliminary April 2017 jobless rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than the 5 percent rate recorded for the state in April 2016, according to a state news release.

South Carolina's jobless rate is at its lowest point since early 2001, but it's been flat through the start of 2017.

Across the country, employers added 211,000 jobs in March. Data from March, for example, showed private sector employment was higher by 300 jobs than originally estimated while total nonfarm payrolls were actually lower by 1,000. The unemployment rate is well below pre-recession levels, a sign that South Carolina's labor market is growing increasingly tight.

The DEO reported there were more than 8.5 million jobs in April, up 215,400 jobs compared to a year ago.

In April, Florida's 24 regional workforce boards reported 19,033 Floridians, including 1,069 veterans, were placed in jobs.

Leisure and hospital sectors had the strongest growth, with 3,100 new jobs, followed by professional and business services with 2,600. The increase in U.S. transportation sector hiring follows revised gains of 6,600 jobs in March and 7,600 positions in February and a 10,200-job loss in January.

"Through the first four months of 2017, MA has added over 20,000 jobs, with much of those gains coming from key sectors of the economy like professional, business and scientific services", Ronald L. Walker, II, secretary of labor and workforce development, said in a statement.

Five industries expanded their employment in April, while three cut jobs.

Government employment declined by 500 jobs in April.

The transportation and utilities sector had the most job growth on the First Coast in the past year with about 4,700 jobs created. Government jobs include public education, public administration agencies and state-owned hospitals. The unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the labor force. That caused the number of those unemployed in the state to decrease 7,300. The numbers are not adjusted for seasonal variations.
