Trump slams Comey, once more dismisses Russia probe as "witch hunt"

Shortly after Mueller was assigned to lead the Russian Federation probe on Wednesday, the president said it would prove that his campaign did not collude with any foreign entity, adding that he looked forward to this matter concluding quickly.

"This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!", Trump wrote on Twitter just hours after the Justice Department announced former FBI Director Robert Mueller would lead the bureau's ongoing probe.

Donald Trump said the appointment of a special prosecutor to take over the Justice Department's probe into alleged ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign "hurts our country terribly".

Mueller was named special prosecutor by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein late Wednesday. And the third question will be whether anyone in the administration, up to and including President Donald Trump, illegally tried to interfere with investigations into the alleged meddling and collusion. "And I think that may be the fear of many in the administration tonight, that it's not confined, and that it actually is like an octopus and that there are a lot of arms and tentacles".

Democrats - and many Republicans - had been eager to hear from Comey after reports emerged this week that Trump may have urged the then-FBI director to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. But GOP lawmakers have grown increasingly anxious since Trump fired Comey, who had been leading the bureau's probe - and after Comey associates said he had notes from a meeting in which Trump asked him to shut down the investigation into the Russian Federation ties of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

As calls from lawmakers and the public for an independent investigation have surged in recent months, the terms special counsel, special prosecutor, and independent counsel have been thrown interchangeably.

"My decision (to appoint a special counsel) is not the finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted".

"(Rosenstein) did acknowledge that he learned Comey would be removed prior to him writing his memo", McCaskill said.

"We look forward to getting this whole situation behind us", the President said.

The administration offered a subdued statement in response to Mueller's appointment.

Fighting back against multiple crises has consumed much of the political oxygen inside the White House, leaving Trump's agenda in doubt. And President Richard Nixon resigned after a damning investigation by a select committee, before he could be impeached.

"It's always nice to have less drama", he said. "And we have very important things to be doing right now, whether it's trade deals, whether it's military, whether it's stopping nuclear".

Some of Trump's Republican allies, like Congressman Jason Amash, have begun cautiously suggesting impeachment is no longer impossible.

With the 2018 Congressional mid-term elections fast approaching, maybe of Trump's erstwhile allies face a hard campaign dominated by questions about the president's conduct and with few legislative victories to fall back on.

The tweets fly in the face of the statement issued on Wednesday night which had appeared as an attempt by Trump's staff to tamp down the raging political storm over Russian Federation which has resulted in Trump's worst week in office so far.
