Trump says he did not ask Comey to end investigation

Mueller responded, "I accept this responsibility", according to the Associated Press. One associate said Comey wrote down as much as he could once he got back to his auto.

But the Russian Federation issue has clouded his early months in office.

"There are serious concerns that the president may have improperly tried to obstruct an FBI investigation".

The issue spilled over onto Wall Street on Wednesday where the S&P 500 and the Dow had their biggest one-day declines since September as investor hopes for tax cuts and other pro-business policies faded amid the political tumult.

In 2013, for instance, the Obama Justice Department secretly obtained two months of phone records for reporters and editors of The Associated Press, which appeared to be linked to a criminal investigation into leaks about a foiled terrorist plot to bomb an airliner.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who picked Mr Mueller, explained his decision to appoint a special counsel by saying: "I determined that it is on the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a special counsel to assume responsibility for this matter".

Trump promised on the campaign trail to prevent Muslims from entering the United States, but his January 27 order to ban travelers from certain Muslim-majority countries was blocked by the courts, which said the U.S. constitution banned discrimination on religious grounds. Learning the news less than a half hour before it was publicly announced, Trump dictated the statement that was soon released.

Republican lawmakers also want to "distance themselves from a scandal that is threatening to overwhelm this Presidency", Mahaffee said.

"What else will the people generating such drivel and nonsense think of next?" he said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a Bloomberg Television interview on Tuesday that Republicans desire "less drama" from the White House.

Representative Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House oversight committee, sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday requesting that it turn over all documents and recordings that detail communications between Comey and Trump.

"Our institutions will weather any individual or group of individuals and I truly believe that".

"I think we're in for a bumpy time here for a while".

It was the moment Democrats had been waiting for: The Justice Department appointed former FBI director Robert S. Mueller III as a special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation investigation. "They [citizens] deserve an FBI Director that is above reproach".

The White House vigorously denied it all.

Trump said Thursday that he respects "the entire thing" but said that he personally has no ties to Russian Federation.

Trump last week fired Comey, who was overseeing the FBI investigation into whether anyone associated with Trump's campaign cooperated with Russian intelligence officials in their effort to influence the 2016 presidential election.
