Southern rock music star Gregg Allman dead at 69


A multiple-time Grammy victor, Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, and the author of Southern rock hits like "Melissa" and "Midnight Rider", Allman had been suffering from health problems for some time; he was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2007, and received a liver transplant in 2010.

The legendary founder of The Allman Brothers Band died at age 69 on Saturday at his home in Savannah, Georgia.

The singer had a number of health issues and canceled some tour dates previous year as a result. In March, he canceled performances for the rest of 2017.

Billboard reports that Allman, who had a history of substance abuse, was previously diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.

Their songs such as "Whipping Post", "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider" laid the foundation for the genre and opened the doors for groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band.

Gregg Allman was 69-years old.

Alllman was married six times, including a four-year marriage to Cher that ended in 1979.

Instead, the brothers formed a series of impressive rock bands that performed in the Daytona Beach area as the Escorts and the Allman Joys.

Besides the brothers, the original band featured Dickey Betts on guitar, Berry Oakley on bass and Butch Trucks and Jai Johnny Johanson on drums.

Cher and Gregg Allman were divorced in 1978 for the final time.

"I was shocked because I listen to him on the radio all the time", said Guyton resident Lisa Tomasello.

"Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years", a statement published on his website reads.

The Allman Brothers reunited in 1989 and would tour on and off over the next 25 years. "I thought that's the hippest thing I've ever heard".

The older you get the more you start to understand your own mortality. Miles, who occasionally toured with Gregg Allman's band, remained a lifelong friend.

However, Allman and Cher reconciled and had a son together, Elijah Blue Allman. Produced by T Bone Burnett, it consisted largely of interpretations of blues standards made popular by performers like Junior Wells and Muddy Waters. A new album, the Don Was-produced Southern Blood, was scheduled for a 2017 release, though its status is unclear.

"Hey everyone. I just wanted y'all to know that I'm now home in Savannah resting on my doctor's orders", he wrote.

"It just wakes up things in your soul that you never knew were there", he said.
