It is believed Cornell died within an hour of leaving the venue. TMZ has confirmed with police that a family friend had to force his way into Cornell's hotel room, where he then found him with a band around his neck. "He seemed to be genuinely excited to be performing in Detroit", the concertgoer said.

"It is being investigated as a possible suicide". She expects some information to be released about the results later in the day. "It takes on a life of its own, and when you listen to it, it becomes your song".

Billboard described Cornell as being in "fine form and spirits" during Soundgarden's show last night.

Cornell was one of the founding members of Soundgarden in 1984, and was the lead singer until 1997 when the band announced it was breaking up. He added that more details would be released in a statement later Thursday.

Cornell died at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel, Woody said. "He was found on the bathroom floor, our medical unit were called and he was pronounced dead on scene", a spokesperson said.
