While the Monarchs were going through their transition from FCS to FBS, they hosted Liberty at S.B. Ballard Stadium in the only other meeting between the schools in which ODU rallied for a 21-17 victory.
"We are very excited about having Liberty on our future schedule", Aggie head coach Doug Martin said. The Flames are slated to play as an independent, it's an odd move becuse usually teams have needed an invite from an FBS conference.
As it stands, New Mexico State's 2018 schedule consists of Wyoming, Minnesota, New Mexico, UTEP, Georgia Southern, Louisiana and two games with Liberty. Liberty was founded in 1971 and began playing football in 1973. He then asked Liberty president Jerry Falwell, Jr., if he was sure about moving to the FBS. Rutgers, Old Dominion, Brigham Young, Army - I might be at that game, who am I supposed to root for? The Monarchs did not have an opponent slotted for their opener September 1.More news: Moon urges both talks and sanctions to rein in N Korea

The Liberty Flames and the New Mexico State Aggies have scheduled an in-season, home-and-home football series for both the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Virginia's other previously announced dates with ODU (Nov. 21, 2020, in Norfolk and September 17, 2022, in Charlottesville) will remain the same. "Furthermore, we were able to maintain our current relationship with in state opponents, Virginia and VMI, respectively".
It also lightens a 2018 schedule that would have included Virginia, Virginia Tech and East Carolina.
"We played a great game in Norfolk in 2013 and I expect the same thing at their place", said Wilder.
