Pope Francis Met With Donald Trump

Pope Francis welcomed President Donald Trump to the Vatican for their first official meeting on May 23 at the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church - and judging by how the Holy Man looked when participating in the requisite photo opportunity, he didn't feel too blessed to be in the presence of the USA leader.

Asked afterwards how the meeting went, the President said: "Great". "We had a fantastic meeting".

The two men have had a rather rocky relationship.

Trump told his host as he left: "Thank you". "It's symbol of peace".

As the Trump's disembarked Air Force One in Italy Melania wasn't interested in the US President's touch.

The Pope and Mr Trump discussed the Middle East, global affairs and the protection of Christian communities around the world, but he was in a more jovial mood with First Lady Melania Trump, asking in Spanish through his interpreter as he pointed towards the President: "What do you give him to eat?" It was initially thought he had suggested "pizza" to her, but in fact he said potica, which is a cake from Mrs Trump's home country of Slovenia.

The Pope gave Trump a number of texts during their gift exchange, including a 200-page book on the environment.

Kyleigh Kuhn, an eco-friendly jewelry designer, recounted her own experience meeting Pope Francis in 2013 and seeing the clothing traditions fading away.

In the past year, the two men have swapped jibes and debated on subjects ranging from migration to unbridled capitalism, as well as the environment.

A Vatican statement highlighted "the joint commitment in favour of life, and freedom of worship and conscience". Since his November election, Trump has pleased the Catholic hierarchy by axing rules protecting tax-funded financing of family planning clinics that offer abortions.

Both Melania and Ivanka Trump were dressed in black with their heads partially covered, in keeping with a traditional Vatican protocol that is no longer expected to be rigourously observed.

Melania meanwhile visited a children's hospital and Ivanka met women trafficked from Africa for the sex trade on a visit to the St Egidio religious community.

Mr Trump and the Pope were famously at loggerheads previous year, when the former said building a wall - the one proposed between the United States and Mexico - would show Mr Trump was "not a Christian".

But there have also been conciliatory moves.

Donald Trump and his family/advisors met with Pope Francis at the Vatican Wednesday on a stop of the president's first foreign trip.
