Whelan, a co-commentator and pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, commented on Twitter to lament Monk's departure, but also said it was important to try and stay upbeat.

The news of Garry Monk's resignation from the club will be a disappointment for the supporters - but one of Leeds' top players has committed to the Whites.

That Leeds let their most successful manager in six years run down to only having a one-year option is one, and what Monk's sticking points were is another.

Earlier this week, Massimo Cellino's controversial ownership of the Yorkshire club finally came to an end, with Italian businessman Andrea Radrizzani completing his takeover of the club.

Rising star Ronaldo Vieira signed a new four-year deal on Wednesday and then Radrizzani made his intentions to repurchase Elland Road known.

"Mr Radrizzani has met with Garry twice. and during the second meeting yesterday it became clear that Garry was considering life beyond Leeds United as at no time did Garry wish to discuss terms for a longer contract".

"Shocking news from GM". "We were keen to do three-year deal".

"We never received any request from him and his agent. No regrets, we did our best #mot", Radrizzani tweeted in response.

Following a disappointing end to the season which saw them miss out on promotion to the Premier League, Leeds United's preparations for next campaign are already underway.
