Daimler's DAIGn.DE Mercedes-Benz "sees value" in having more suppliers in the US state of Alabama, where it has a factory in Tuscaloosa, the group said on Tuesday.
Workers at the Rastatt plant will be no strangers to EV manufacturing, having previously assembled the limited-production B-Class Electric Drive, an EV variant of the current B-Class range built using a battery pack supplied by Tesla. As many as 10 new electric passenger cars will be available by 2022 with Mercedes predicting as much as 25 percent of its sales will come from EVs by 2025.
Both Daimler's Mercedes-Benz and BMW BMWG.DE have factories in the United States where they build higher-margin sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for export to Asia and Europe.
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed plans to produce a handful of entry-level EQ models at the company's plant in Rastatt, Germany.
Future EQ models can be integrated in the series production of existing Mercedes-Benz plants on four continents. The first editions of the vehicles will be rolled out at the Bremen plant of Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz's Rastatt Production Facility To Produce Compact EVs
The Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant is running at high capacity utilization, and now creating the conditions for the production start of the next compact auto generation in 2018. "In the year of our 25th anniversary, this is great news for our highly motivated workforce", says Thomas Geier, Site Manager Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant. This means constructing two new body shops on the site, as well as a training centre. Daimler's segments include Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services.
As a reminder here, Daimler is now (publicly) aiming for the release of more than 10 electrified passenger vehicles by 2022 - with these offerings including everything from SUVs to compacts.
Ten billion euros will be invested in the expansion of the electric fleet in the next few years.
They didn't confirm what electric auto will be produced at the plant beyond saying that it will be "compact electric vehicles". In addition to that, luxury-class EQ models will be produced at the plant in Sindelfingen. The 48-volt on-board power supply of the company will make its debut in the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class.More news: (COST) Position Held by Stralem & Co. Inc
