The announcement was made at Hulu's upfront session in Manhattan. The series follows a motley crew of teenagers who are forced to come together when they discover that their parents are all part of a secret society of super villains called The Pride.
Deadline reports that Hulu has upgraded Runaways from their original request for a pilot with back-up scripts to a full first season. First things first. Marvel's Runaways is based on the award-winning Marvel comics created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The show, being described as a coming-of-age action series, is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe - their parents. The group includes a video game-playing nerd, a goth loner, a handsome girl who embodies privilege, and a jock heartthrob. The superhero series is the brainchild of Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature. The current plan is for it to premiere sometime in winter 2018.
Meanwhile Willimon will be executive producing The First (working title), which explores the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization in the near future. The series is about space exploration and colonization, but also "the human spirit", in case you anxious this would just be some unfeeling voyage into the void. Hulu also ordered a full season for the show's second installment.
