Killer artificial intelligence returns in 'Alien: Covenant'

Fassbender, who returns to the franchise after his acclaimed performance as android David says that "for me, Alien Covenant is in a lot of ways like the first Alien".

Fast forward to Alien: Covenant and you'd have to miss literally every trailer, interview and poster to not realise that Katherine Waterston's Daniels is the hero of this story. Yes, it has the pieces people wanted last time around. "If it gets out of the box, to the countries that should not have it, then we will have problems". We've got bursts from the chest, along with some parts of the body whose injuries render an iconic death tame by comparison.

Skid steers loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers and JS excavators were supplied to 20th Century Fox for the making of the new Alien Covenant film which hits United Kingdom cinema screens on Friday. "I think it's going to be fun". "You could say monsters from outer space, gods from outer space, engineers from outer space invented it", he says. In lieu of the distracting multi-cam rhythm established throughout Scott's recent reign, which sometimes had a sense of movement closer to sitcom than cinema, are tightly held compositions, hard lines, and, most welcome, a notable lack of repeated set-ups, which only appear at the occasional shot-reverse dialogue. Given that, you had to expect a bit more from this movie. As fascinating as it is to watch an oddly homo (auto?) erotic bond develop between the two "brothers", however, it's something of a relief once the movie remembers that it has a few more action sequences to pack in, crewmembers to murder and aliens to 'splode.

After a haunting prelude that looks like it was filmed as an homage to Stanley Kubrick, featuring the "synthetic" artificial human that calls himself David (Michael Fassbender) and Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), the billionaire founder of the Weyland Corp., we join the Covenant, a massive colony ship on a seven-year journey to a faraway planet.

Captain Dallas, who's sure-footed leadership and charisma initially leads us to believe that he's the film's protagonist, is even given the indignity of dying off-screen.

The crew includes terraforming expert Daniels (Katherine Waterston), first mate Christopher Oram (Billy Crudup), chief pilot Tennessee (Danny McBride), and security officer Sgt. Lope (Demián Bichir). I was disappointed that Covenant's xenomorphs just look like skinny fetuses, instead of bats or werewolves.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. I knew the explosion was coming, so I could appreciate the way a new group of actors dealt with the chaos and horror of the chest-burst for the first time.

"Alien: Covenant" is set 10 years after "Prometheus", which took place in 2093, so now we're in 2103, about two decades prior to the events of "Alien", and if that doesn't mess with your mind, wait until you see the Dueling Fassbenders portion of the current movie.
