India Announce Team for Champions Trophy; Dhawan, Rohit and Shami Return

Mohammed Shami last played ODI cricket in an attempt to win an ICC Trophy and now he returns with the same goal ahead of him.

Gambhir's loyal fans also slammed the Indian board and a hashtag named #bringbackgambhir was soon trending on social micro-blogging site Twitter.

The board had earlier missed the April 25 deadline for submission of the squad in their act of defiance against the International Cricket Council's (ICC) new revenue model, which reduced the BCCI's revenues from $570 million to $293 million, it added.

The 15-member squad selected for the tournament starting in England next month doesn't have too many surprises in it. Ashwin, who suffered a sports hernia, was also advised six-to-eight weeks of rehabilitation after a gruelling Test series against Australia. After getting energetic captain like Virat Kohli the expectation of victory of Indian team has increased greatly. "As far as Virat kohli is concerned, he had a break after injury". But as of now I want to focus on the IPL and then switch to the preparations for the Champions Trophy. The final will be played on 18th June 2017 at The Oval, London.

Prasad said that the main players who were discussed at length for selection were Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur, each of whom has been placed on standby for the tournament.

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni retained his place in the squad amid whispers that the wicketkeeper-batsman's "finisher" reputation was on the wane.

He also expressed his views on a player being picked in an ODI side based on IPL performances. The BCCI was outvoted 13-1 last week at the ICC meetings in its bid to stall the new deal which considerably slashes India's share from global events in the 2015-2023 cycle. "We will try to bring home the Champions Trophy", he said.

Defending champions India open their campaign against Pakistan on 4 June at Edgbaston, will face Sri Lanka and South Africa on 8 and 11 June in their subsequent Group fixtures.
