In 2014, Marvel killed Wolverine in the comics and Laura took on the Wolverine identity in the wake of his death. That we don't feel we've fully seen it, so I was like, 'Jim if we introduced halfway or near the end of the movie that full berserker animalistic insane Wolverine and he's somehow fighting our hero, audiences won't know what to feel.' And I remember him saying, 'Trust me, trust me, trust me.' And I was a bit of a pain in the ass on that one, I was like, 'I'm just not sure.

Hugh Jackman revealed in an interview with Collider that he was initially skeptical of playing both the aging Logan and the villainous, mindless clone of Wolverine in his prime, X-24.

Knowing how rare it is to see a child actress as good as Keen, Logan director James Mangold has made quick work by talking to 20 Century Fox about having the young Spanish-British actress return to the big screen as X-23. And when I saw it, I cried. We saw it for the first time, and both of us wept.

Jackman once again stated that he was done playing Wolverine. The scene that made fans, cast and crew cry was when Laura aka X-23 changed the cross to form an X conveying the end of X-Men's Wolverine. I understood what it represented and thematically the idea of battling himself, which of course is right at the core of this character that we never fully got to, so I kind of loved the externalization of that. And I think by that point we'd created already the Wolverine that people wanted to see. "I certainly didn't want people speculating that we had left a hole open for more moneymaking and bilking and doing". Just like a regular movie, we're not leaving something out there.
