Europe tour: PM Modi in Spain

Trump launched a salvo against German auto exports to the United States last week, saying that "the Germans are bad, very bad" during a meeting with senior European officials in Brussels, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported. "Moreover, when USA consumers buy foreign goods and services (the current account), that money returns in the form of investment (the capital account)".

"Hola Espana! Prime Minister Modi arrives in Madrid, first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in almost three decades, is received by Spanish FM in a special gesture", said Gopal Baglay, spokesperson for the ministry of external affairs in a tweet.

According to news reports, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) meeting of the United States and its allies last week was overshadowed by Trump accusing the others of contributing less resources than the US.

Merkel also spoke about the importance of "large democracies" like India in maintaining a rules-based global order.

"Transatlantic ties are of paramount importance to us. but the current situation gives more reasons to take our destiny in our own hands", Merkel said, stressing that "Europe must become a player active in global affairs". India must also provide its strong support to bring the democratic order back on track.

"We do not have the right to spoil the environment for future generations. that is, morally speaking, a crime on our part", Modi said after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said he agreed with Merkel that Europe needed to forge its own path. "We want the European Union to become stronger and India will play a positive role towards that through the medium of Germany", Modi said after talks with Merkel. "The pace of development of our relations is fast, direction positive and destination clear".

They covered areas of digitalisation, skill development, sustainability, cyber policy, development cooperation, advanced training, vocational education, health sector, alternative medicine, foreign service institutes, railway safety and sustainable urban development.
