Rafael Nadal defeated David Goffin 7-6 (3), 6-2 to set up high-octane semifinal showdown against Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open.

He pulled back an initial break with three straight games and broke again to take the first set, 6-4.

His next match against the 22-year-old No16 seed Nick Kyrgios was highly anticipated, a genuine contender for the "popcorn" match of the day.

"Most things weren't working particularly well", Murray said. "But I was able to play two matches and (my wrist) has gotten better". But I hung in there and knew that eventually I'm going to get my chances and going to get some looks on the second serves.

The tennis player from Austria didn't have many problems against lucky loser Borna Coric.

"It's a huge win, for sure". "Obviously he didn't play very good today. I have noticed it from the beginning".

Play starts for the Madrid Masters quarter-finals at 12pm (11am BST). He won his first career title in Marrakech, Morocco, last month.

Djokovic held and, when Lopez committed three unforced errors at 6-5, there was only going to be one victor. He may have beaten Djokovic in Monte-Carlo but he then lost to Nadal, in their only meeting to date, 6-3, 6-1.

Predominantly playing the slice, Lopez hit the drop shot effectively at times to drag his opponent forward, but Djokovic drained errors or shot balls from the Spaniard's one-handed backhand as well. "I think Feliciano played really well, especially in the second set".

Djokovic won in Doha to start the season but never made it past the quarterfinals in the following four tournaments he played.

Kei Nishikori recovered from a terrible start to beat Argentine Diego Schwartzman 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 and faces David Ferrer next.

Nishikori, a finalist in Madrid in 2014, is playing in his first tournament since March.

In a third-round match that was interrupted by rain after the first game of the second set, when the chair umpire ordered the retractable roof to be closed, the Japanese sixth seed showed no signs of having sat out a month and a half due to a right wrist injury.

The latest chapter in the tale sees a resurgent Nadal taking on a struggling Djokovic - who recently parted ways with his entire coaching team - on the Spaniard's favoured surface and it promises to be another fascinating encounter between the pair.

"It's going to be a very tough match against one of the best players in tennis history", Nadal said. "It was a big step forward".

Four-time champion Rafael Nadal has made it through to the semi-final stage of the Madrid Open courtesy of a straight-sets win over David Goffin.

Djokovic had battled back from 3-0 down in the deciding set in his opening match against Nicolas Almagro in the Spanish capital.

In the women's Madrid Open, third seed Simona Halep remains on course to retain her title as she thrashed American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1.

Halep with face in-form Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic or Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final.

Bouchard ousted Maria Sharapova in the second round.
