Celtics nab top overall pick

Amid all the conspiracy theories surrounding the NBA's lottery over the years, there hasn't been much room for shadiness and extracurricular speculation when it comes to the 12th lottery spot. Who won big and who left disappointed?

The Boston Celtics are in a great place right now.

There is no debate that Fultz and Ball have risen above the rest as the consensus top two picks in the draft. Thomas, under contract for next season for the equivalent of minimum wage in today's National Basketball Association at just $6.3 million, is unquestionably the Celtics' best player.

Draft projections at Draftexpress.com, NBADraft.net and Tankathon.com also have Jackson going to Philly. Lonzo is going to make everybody better. "That's not saying we definitely won't draft a guard, we may, but we're very happy with Eric".

It's more about them not losing than winning. If they can find a guard who can score and run the offense, the Sixers would be cooking with gas. Sacramento now has the 5th and 10th picks in the upcoming stacked draft. It would have converted into a second round pick.

Sure, it could have been better.

The team's uncertain future certainly adds to the urgency that will come with this pick.

Phoenix has been begging for a star player ever since the Steve Nash era ended. Both players are projected to be point guards at the next level and the Celtics already have All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas in the fold. He may be on track, but there's no guarantee he gets there. Kansas' Josh Jackson or Duke's Jayson Tatum seem like the best options to fill that need. Another case where tanking didn't necessarily equate to the way it was intended. Two-time National Basketball Association champion and franchise great Walt Frazier attended the event with the hope of being New York's good luck charm.
