A prison inmate, who was being treated at an IL hospital, is dead after he managed to gain control of an officer's weapon and hold a nurse hostage on Saturday, according to officials. No details about the hospital employee taken hostage or the inmate have been released.
The hospital campus along Randall Road is closed, according to a city of Geneva statement.
"Hostage negotiators and the SWAT team were called in and they began a active negotiation with him", Gengler said after the situation was resolved. "Patients within the hospital are on lockdown but safe and secure", Waterman said.
Multiple agencies, including the Geneva Police Department, the Kane County Sheriff's office and SWAT teams, responded to the incident, surrounding the scene as it developed.
