8 dead in shooting rampage in MS; suspect arrested

Vincent Mitchell is trying to make sense of how a family dispute in southern MS led to a rampage that killed eight people, including a deputy. A sheriff's deputy is among those killed in the shootings.

Authorities say it is too early to consider any possible motive behind the killings.

The gunfire erupted Saturday night at Godbolt's in-laws' home in Bogue Chitto after the deputy arrived in response to a domestic disturbance call, and spread to two houses in nearby Brookhaven.

The third crime scene was in East Lincoln, where a man and woman were killed. "They would not let me live and let live".

"We was talking about me taking my children and [unintelligible] I was having a conversation with her step-daddy and her momma, and her, my wife, about me taking my children home", he said.

Godbolt showed up at Mitchell's home in the southern MS town of Bogue Chitto shortly before midnight Saturday to demand that his estranged wife give up their two children.

The deputy was killed there. Authorities gave no details on his relationship to the victims, but a member of Godbolt's church said everyone but the deputy was related to Godbolt by blood or marriage.

"I'm devastated. It don't seem like it's real", Mitchell said outside his yellow frame house, in a community of modest houses, trailer homes and small churches set among thick woods.

The suspect, who has been identified as 35-year-old Willie "Cory" Godbolt, was taken into custody and treated for a gunshot wound.

Apparently, speaking about the deputy Godbolt told the reporter, "My pain wasn't designed for him". People who didn't even live at the house, but that's what they do.

Godbolt has a long criminal history, said the report.

Godbolt now faces seven charges of first degree murder and one charge of capital murder.

Durr had a wife and 11-year-old son, and was training to participate in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in local schools, according to The Daily Leader.

Durr worked two years for the Sheriff's Department and previously for four years at the Brookhaven Police Department.

"Death. Death. My intentions was to have y'all to kill me".

"Suicide by cop was my intention", he says in the video.

When asked what was next for him, Godbolt responded.
